Save Space With Succession And Companion Crops

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

One way to save space is by means of succession crops. On our plan we use the letters “f.b.” meaning “followed by. For example, the first row at the west end of our garden this year will produce an early crop of peas to be followed by a late summer crop of beets and carrots. The earlier crop of beets and carrots will be grown near the middle of the garden where no succession crop will follow them because, by the time they have been pulled and eaten, the vines of the squash and muskmelon in the adjacent row will be spreading over the space they occupied.

Although it has not been shown on the plan, a third sowing of beets and carrots will probably follow either the potatoes or the earlier planting of sweet corn. Companion crops afford a third means of conserving space. They involve nothing more complicated than raising two or more crops simultaneously in the same row. The classic example practiced by many generations of our ancestors was growing pumpkins in the cornfield. In our plan, we intend to raise radishes between the cucumber plants.

Mid America Trimming Time

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

In the heart of the Midwest there are hundreds of homes that are unsightly and almost covered up by the excessive growth of evergreens, trees and shrubs. They are usually the unhappy results of the use of unsuitable plant material, the improper location or too close spacing of the plants five, ten or twenty years ago.

It is not uncommon to find an otherwise attractive home nestling behind a dense growth of evergreens such as Chinese arbor-vitae, Austrian or Scotch pines, spruce and red cedar now reaching for the eaves, darkening and shutting off views from both first and second floor windows.

In many cases the two evergreens planted on either side of the entrance have almost grown together and one can scarcely get to the front door without having his hat knocked off or a dash of water shaken down the back of his neck.

The owners of these homes hesitate to remove these overgrown palms or to work on trimming trees because they realize the place will look bare and they dont know what to plant in their place or just how to go about the job. In some cases the owners have tried to reduce the size of the trees by severe pruning but the new picture frequently becomes worse than before the deheading took place.

Get The Best Ideas For Wholesale Gift Under One Roof!

The sale of goods or certain merchandise to retailers, to industrial, commercial, institutional, or other professional people dealing with business, or to other wholesalers and related subordinated service is known as wholesaling. The other word for “wholesaling” would be “jobbing”. “Wholesale” basically stands for the resale of new as well as old and used goods to retailers, to industrial, commercial, institutional or professional users, or to other people commonly known as wholesalers. This involves an agent or a broker who buys merchandise for these persons or companies or sells merchandise to such persons or companies. The main work of these wholesalers would be to gather sort and grade goods in bulk and repack and redistribute the same goods in smaller lots. Wholesalers of most products usually function from independent areas.

Wholesale marketing is a different idea. Furthermore, the consumption and production of marketed food are spatially separated. Production predominantly occurs in the rural areas whilst consumption occurs in the urban areas. This is wholesale marketing for food products which takes place at specified and demarcated wholesale markets, where usually there is a gathering of wholesale traders.

What You Need To Know About Hiring A Marquee

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Marquee hires have grown remarkably since their circus-tent years. Today, they are complex structures that are the picture of elegance that enhance any landscape setting. They can accommodate the largest of guest lists to the smallest, with enough room for head tables, dance floors, banquet areas, and spacey walking room.

They are easily adaptable to fit any party theme and you, as the host, will find it a relief in knowing they are easy to assembly and dismantle. Most companies will accommodate your wishes of dates and times of assembly and dismantling, and the key thing to remember here is that there are no tie-down ropes for your guests to trip over.

By using marquee hires for your event, you will keep in tradition of using a hall. The company supplying the marquee will offer to rent you tables, chairs, flooring, and even lights for your party. If you choose to go elsewhere to decorate your setting, that is your choice as well. Youll also be pleased in knowing that you can use their catering services or referrals for your food and beverage needs. All in all, you will end up saving a significant amount of money rather than wasting it on a hall where your guests cannot experience a marquee party atmosphere.

Cuttings And The Different Ways Of Planting It

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

West February

Start Geranium

Start cuttings of geraniums now, so that young, well rooted plants will be available for spring bedding. Cuttings can be rooted in sand, vermiculite, or any other commonly used rooting medium. Transplant the rooted cuttings to pots as soon as young roots are formed. Do not transplant the geranium plants into too rich a soil, or you may have trouble with basal rot.

A small greenhouse is a wonderful asset for growing bedding plants. However, many gardeners get by, by starting their seeds and cuttings in a bright window in the home and later transferring them to an electric cable-heated frame. The use of polyethylene film in place of glass for greenhouses and frames will undoubtedly renew interest among amateurs in growing their own bedding plants.

A greenhouse can be covered with polyethylene at a fraction of the cost of glass. Except for the need of replacing the polyethylene at least every other year, it has a number of advantages over glass. Polyethylene permits the entry of ultra-violet light much better than glass, and thus ensures stronger plant growth. It is apt to stand up better in a hail storm than glass, and is much cheaper to replace. A double thickness of polyethylene inflated is recommended.

Get The Best Ideas About Mother’s Day Gift

Friday, January 25th, 2008

“The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”. This phrase or proverb or common saying defines the much-celebrated “Mother’s Day”. The role of the mother has definitely changed over the years but she is still the most significant member of the family. One day should be solely devoted to her: to cherish her love, to shower her with love, to make her feel really special. Mother’s day: a day dedicated to your mom, the most powerful woman in your world.

In different parts of the world Mother’s day is celebrated on different days. According to one school of thought, this day emerged from the concept of the ancient Greek worship of the mother. Apparently and similar to the Greeks, ancient Romans also celebrated another day Matronalia, which was dedicated to the goddess Juno, and mothers were given gifts on this day. In the United States of America, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Mother’s Day was inspired by the British day in the United States and was imported by social activist, Julia Ward Howe, after the American Civil war. She wanted to unite women against war, she understood and sympathised with the pain of losing a child. In 1912, Anna Jarvis created the Mother’s day International Association, after Julia Ward Howe failed in her noble cause, carrying on from where her mother left off, in 1905.

Doing my own home electrical wiring

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

I often get visitors at my site asking about electrical home wiring and different wiring methods and projects. Their main concern is to attempt to do the electrical project or hire it out to professionals.

Because of the housing crash and financial market meltdown, Im observing that many people cant get construction loans to hire contractors to do the home construction for them. I see many people doing the work for themselves out of necessity and not only to save money.

Most homeowners dont have a problem with things like outdoor siding and putting in doors and windows, but they are often doubtful about electrical home wiring.

First of all, the most important thing to observe is safety. All home electrical work thats done needs to be on disconnected circuits. The next thing to understand is that all electrical wiring jobs need to be inspected whether its done by the homeowner or professionals. This helps to ease the fears that homeowners often have wondering if their home wiring projects are going to be dangerous to them.

Plant Your Home with Pictures in Mind

Try to keep a list of garden jobs on a card to do during March, and hang it where you don’t lose it so you’ll be sure to get the jobs done when time and weather permits in the East.

The bed south of our sun porch is a problem; it is in the heavy shade of a shellbark hickory, also shaded by a huge honeysuckle. It is not only shaded, but it’s dry. I find that even with watering it is rather hard to keep primroses alive in this spot so I am going to use it as a place to try out some of the named varieties of lily turf that I got last fall. I have ‘Majestic,’ ‘Lilac Beauty,’ ‘Monroi White,’ and Silver Ribbon. These are all varieties of liriope. They can take shade, rather dry growing conditions, and also the birds. The planting is just under the hanging bird feeder and the birds, especially sparrows, going after the food they throw out, are rough on tender plants like primroses.
