March The Best Month to Clean Pools and other Water Features

Friday, February 29th, 2008

As perennials in the South begin growing during March keep a close check on them for diseases. When peonies start out they make rapid growth, so keep a close check for botrytis blight and aphids, both of which can cause the buds to blight and fall off.

March on pests! Now is the time to save many long hours of trouble later on with roses. Check for any kind of dead tissue and remove it; remove old leaves and litter all are harboring places for insects or disease spores. As soon as new growth is a few inches long start spraying and dusting to control black spot.

If the protective mounds of soil around the base of the canes have not been removed they should be now. Prune back any winter killed canes. In case of a late freeze (which is entirely possible in much of our area) , do not remove the blackened canes too soon. After a few days nature will form a ring around the cane to a point where the tissues have been killed”prune to this point and new growth will then be stimulated. Paint the wounds made by this pruning to prevent bleeding. When you are certain that the danger of freezing is past put on a mulch of well-rotted cow manure to improve the quality and increase the quantity of the first crop of blooms. Keep the manure from touching the canes.

Have you thought about constructing a special shed for the bins?

You may be able to install a shed that is purpose built for the bin. These sheds are slightly higher than the bin, as this allows for the lid to be raised and have an access door at the front of the structure. As with the permanent screen, these sheds can be designed to suit several bins or a number of sizes. These sheds can be made from wood or metal to suit your specifications.

Sheds for wheelie bins should ideally have a concrete floor ” this will make cleanups of spills much more straightforward.

* Creating murals isn’t just about applying your design. It starts with preparation of your wall surface. You’ll need a special sealer for fresh plaster or concrete and any holes or cracks that you’ve filled will also need sealing before painting over. Once you’ve completed your mural you may need to protect it with a clear glaze that will also give it a shiny finish.

* Remember to choose your paint according to whether it is for interior or exterior use. Also consider how much wear it will receive and what it will need to withstand. For example, murals in kitchens and bathrooms will need a paint that is water-resistant. It’s never worth skimping and buying cheap paints, so shop wisely.

Carpet Cleaning Naperville: How to Pick the Best Carpet for Your Home

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Naperville residents have a big decision to make, when it’s time to buy new carpet. You have a few main fiber selections to choose from. The one you pick, can come down to your budget. The big three carpet fibers are nylon, polyester, and olefin. They each have their own unique characteristics.

Whatever carpet you pick, the fiber type will determine the results of your cleaning. Nylon carpets are king for cleaning. Next come, olefin and polyester.

Nylon carpets have the ability to spring back to their original state. If you had to pick one carpet type for your home, in most instaces, it would be nylon. Nylon can be stained permanantly by pet urine and artificial dyes.

Carpets made from polyester won’t lose their color. They are sometimes made from recycled plastics which is great for the environment. Once polyester carpets get crused by heavy foot traffic they will never retain their original appearance.

One of the main reasons people buy olefin carpet is it’s ability to resist staining. Olefin isn’t affected by direct sunlight. Olefin will crush and never re-gain it’s original look, even after a professional cleaning you are more than likely to see areas that have a dull look to them.

A painted mural can be a fabulously eye-catching feature, indoors or outdoors – and it isn’t just for experienced artists. The possibilities are almost endless, whether you are looking for something to brighten up a child’s room or to create a visual focus in an elegant living room. With a bit of planning and practice, and with the help of the various aids on the market, painting an attractive mural is within reach for most of us.

Inspirations for Murals

Whatever you like to see can become a mural! Landscapes are a popular choice for covering large areas of wall. It could be an enchanted forest for a child’s room or a peaceful vista in a living room. Trompe l’oeil paintings (paintings that deceive the eye into thinking that the image is real) are also popular – for example, faux picture windows that seem to open onto a rural scene, a seascape or even a cityscape.

You can also use murals as the equivalent of hanging pictures. You can choose motifs that match your decor and the architectural style of your home. The old-world look of Tuscany is created partly by the use of painted murals, including views of vineyards and olive groves and decorative grape and foliage motifs.

How To Know Your Plant Zone

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Before beginning your garden consult one of the maps that certain books, magazines, agricultural bulletins, and seed catalogs print, showing temperature belts, or one of the weather tables showing the date of the last probable frost in each state. Find out who the best gardeners are quite near you, preferably by watching whose gardens seem to do best, and then boldly ask their advice on when to plant, which things do best, which things need special attention, and what kind of attention. Whether you are a beginner or a newcomer to a community, most of them will be quick to help.

By now you may be wondering whether gardening is not a lot of work. I cannot answer that one, because the word “work” means different things to different people. If you mean by work something disagreeable that requires a lot of effort to do but that you do in order to get paid money, I can only answer that gardening in order to make money, or even to save money, is hard work.
