My Happy Life In Planting Roses

Monday, June 30th, 2008

“Great balls of fire in the morning” Youve often heard that expression. But this morning it was literally true at our house. Maybe you can learn from our experience and avoid what might have been serious. The motor on the hot water circulating pump for the cool section of the greenhouse was put in close to the ground under one of the benches. Dirt was scooped out, a board put under it to keep it out of the dirt, and a piece of plywood put over the top to keep out any drip.

But this morning the motor shot out flashes of fire, then shuddered and died. I thought surely the motor had burned out. Upon examination, however, I found that dirt had filled in under the motor, it was all wet around there, and the lead-in wires had shorted out, blowing a fuse fortunately.

So cleaning out under the motor and retaping the connecting wires was all that was needed. But you may rest assured that this will have a periodic checking. This was one of those just below freezing early spring or late winter mornings, so it wasnt bad. But I shuddered to think what it might have been.

Mulch – Nothing More Discouraging to Weeds

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Everyone knows or practically everyone knows, that fall is the ideal time to get the lawn in shape for the winter. We gave ours an early feeding with fertilizer, and seeded some of the spots that had suffered during the summer. Black dirt was lightly sprinkled over the new seed, and it is surprising what a quick start and vigorous growth it made.

I don’t think our lawn has ever gone through the winter in better shape, and SOON it will get another light feeding. In spite of everything, there always seem to be a few spots that show up bare this time of year. I have to walk out over the lawn to find them, but they are there. Runners will fill many of these spots during the coming weeks, but I like to give them an assist.

Good seed is too expensive to waste. It doesn’t pay to sow anything but GOOD seed. Weeds will fill up the bare spots, without your sowing them. So, almost any time now, I’ll go over the lawn with a bucket of seed and a bucket of black dirt. (If you don’t have good weed-free black dirt you had better use peat moss, milled spagnum moss, or you can use vermiculite) .

Things I Like About My Aunt’s Bamboo Compost Pail

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

She just bought a bamboo compost pail two weeks or so ago and I have to say, I am jealous. I always thought having a compost bucket in your kitchen was a sure recipe for fruit flies, mold and bad smells, but I had to take it all back when I viewed this thing in action.

She can put all the kitchen scraps generated by her family of five in there and she only has to take it out once per week or so. It looks absolutely beautiful, and best of all, it has redundant filters so there is absolutely no stench!

Not only does the bamboo look great in her kitchen but the bamboo plant is a fast growing, easy to feed, non-resource intensive renewable resource. Unlike many trees that take several decades to mature, bamboo for wood can be grown in just a couple seasons, making it one of the most green materials in existence.

The compost pail is also very resilient, making it a far superior material over, say, ceramic, when it comes to things falling off the counter (hey, it happens) and unlike some of the stainless steel ones out there, it doesn’t show off every single mark and fingerprint.

Great flower decorations on a shoestring

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

After years of searching, you’ve finally found your soul mate. It wasn’t easy at first but you did it.

As your wedding day approaches, however, you’re afraid – very afraid. The reason? You might go overboard on your decorating budget and spend the rest of the month eating at 7-11!

Fear not for I have the answer. Below are some tips to help you save money on flowers courtesy of Meredith Waga Perez, owner of NYC’s Belle Fleur.

Flowers are nice to look at and make any wedding special. But filling vases with expensive flowers can cost much. To get the same effect without spending much, float three flower heads in a crystal bowl. This will impress people and save you a bundle.

Want your bride to walk on roses like a queen? Or looking for something to scatter at tables to accent those lovely candlesticks? Instead of going for full blossoms, use rose petals.

Perez said 15 roses will give you about 200 petals – which is a good amount to begin with. For a bigger bargain, buy roses by the pound and walk like a god!

Canine Incontinence – What You Can Do

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Dog urinary tract infections are common among 14% of the dog population in the entire world. The culprits behind dog urinary problems are bacteria which have infiltrated the dog?s body. Bacteria enter the dog?s internal system through the food it eats and the water it drinks everyday. In some instances, bacteria gain access to the dog?s urinary system through its external urinary openings. This is most common in female dogs because they have shorter urethra than their male counterparts, making it easier for bacteria to penetrate.

Like humans, dogs are prone to health problems. One health condition which poses a great risk for dogs is the urinary tract infection (UTI). Yes, you got it right! Dogs are also prone to urinary tract infection. You may not know it but your dog may be suffering from this health disease.

If you are hesitant to bring your dog to a veterinarian for financial or whatever reasons, you may use natural remedies to try to minimize your dog?s infection or better yet, cure it. There is a very effective natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs.

Redecorating Your Bedroom? Use A Decorators Trick.

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Are you right in the middle of redecorating, including one or more bedrooms? If so here’s a little trick that the professional redecorators use. A bed in a bag.

If you look in all those home beautiful magazines there’s so many beautifully presented bedroom with color and design matched bedding looking great? All matching, all hot. It looks as if they made the bedding just for that bed doesn’t it?

Yet you try and reproduce the look and you can’t. You can find a great looking duvet cover but you can’t find pillow cases to match. So you do the best you can and try and find something that looks good with that cover. But it never looks like it did in the magazine picture.

Now of course the professional decorators know how to make a bedroom look great, they’re professionals. And they know how to do it with minimal cost. They use a bed in a bag. All the bedding you need right there in one bag. Every single piece of bedding you want, in one purchase.

Gardening In Dimensions

Square foot gardening is a wonderful way to introduce anyone to the first time gardening experience. It requires so little work! Once you have the right soil, there is no tilling, no weeding, and no backaches! You can also be assured of greater success in growing those delicious vegetables. Square foot gardening requires a box that can be made in many different sizes according to your needs and desires. A 4×4 size can hold enough food for one adult for the season. The soil for your box must be carefully mixed with the right ingredients. It should be a mix of three equal parts of vermiculite, peat moss, and several composts. Once you have these components for your box garden, all you have to do is water! The common mistake of novice gardeners is over watering. This will be avoided because the soil mix has natural moisture retainers. The excess water will simply run off. You can place your box garden just about anywhere as long as it has a lot of direct sunlight.

It is much more convenient than a large plot located way out in the back of the yard that seems to attract every weed imaginable. A box garden will have very few weeds because the soil consists of specific clean ingredients.

Dont Buy Any Garden Tractor Without Reading This First

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

The garden tractor was one of the inventions in the farming industry to quickly get a high demand, the reason being that they were able to do all type of work on a family farm. When it comes to a tractor pull, there were many people who got a change to get together & also to visit different towns for the completion of farm work.

This also presented people with a chance to see neighboring towns, and also enjoy a good meal away from home. Mowing the lawns of the farm is typically one of the tasks a garden tractor can accomplish. Importantly, it does a wide range of functions in a farm, which makes the job of the person who is operating this machine so much easy. This machine has thus been used for a long time now, mainly in farms for this purpose.

Mostly, there are two types of lawn mowers available, one with an electric start & the other one with a pull start. If you are planning to buy one from a local store, it will be in your best interest to take a test drive before taking a decision. The cost of a garden tractor can be very high.

The Principles of Organic Vegetable Gardening

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

More farmers are growing interested in organic vegetable gardening because it is cost efficient and they are able to grow almost the same yield of crops. It is not difficult do this at house but first, you have to understand the principles of organic vegetable gardening. First, organic vegetable gardening does not use any manmade fertilizers, nutrients or pesticides. The only thing needed for doing this is sunshine and water, both supplied by nature. We don’t produce these ourselves but you have to find the ideal area and provide adequate drainage.

Over and above sunshine and water you could encourage plant growth by using items like compost heap made from waste food, chipped portion of barks, garden compost, moulds from fallen leaves and natural fertilizer. Ready a concoction of all these items and distribute it all over the soil.

A lot of people are scared off by animal fertilizer but you don’t have to scoop this from the toilet because this is sold in stores. Chickens are a good idea, just let them free to walk all all over your garden. Some individuals use dead animals or meat products: you just leave them for a couple of weeks in the bin because maggots will soon come out and this is what you use to help fertilize your garden.
