Valves are mechanical devices that are used to control the volume of flow and pressure of fluids or gases. Closing, opening, or partially opening a passage through which the material passes regulates this flow.

Compression valves: this type of valve is most commonly used in the two- handle faucet. Compression valve consists of basically two valves that work in conjunction. One valve is used to control the flow of cold water, whereas the other valve controls the flow of hot water. When turned, each valve handle compresses against rubber washers, which in turn regulates the flow of water which passes through the valve.

Compression valves use stems of varying designs, but all designs utilize neoprene washers. However, compression faucets are much more prone to leaks due to the twisting motion which in time wears out the rubber seal at the bottom of the stem.

Then comes the cartridge valves that are also known as washer- less valves are operated by only one handle. This way these are different to the compression valves. Inside this valve a metal or plastic cylindrical cartridge is located. As you lift the handle, the valve stem raises and its holes align with the holes of the cartridge. On the other hand, as you twist the handle, cold and hot water mix and regulate water temperature.

Disk valve: these are also known as washer- less valves. Single- handled kitchen sink faucets are usually controlled with the disk valves. These are located within the faucet’s body. Each disk has a series of holes. Inlet hoses allow hot and cold water to enter the valve whereas the outlet hose passes the water through the valve spout. Leaks can generally be traced back to the cylinder or the three neoprene seals located below the cylinder.

Ball valves, as the name implies, are stop valves that use a ball to stop or start the flow of fluid. These comprise of a cylindrical cap under the handle. If leaks come from the valves’ spout, tightening the cap commonly stops the leaks.

Repairing valve: Leaking water valve is the most common plumbing problem within the home. Thus, repairing valves are highly prone to leaks. However, these can be repaired very easily.
