While moles and gophers are two very common animal pests, they are similar and often confused. Both build a complex of tunnels the lawn, however this is where the similarities end. There is a number of ways to tell them apart, moles are smaller, have a pointy snout and long front claws. They do not eat your lawn, but rather the insects they find there. The tunnels they make leave mounds of dirt on your lawn that cause it to be uneven. Gophers, also leave mounds of dirt but they do more extensive underground damage and cause sinkholes in the lawn.
