Know About Various Roofing Materials
Asphalt Shingles are commonly used for residential roofing materials and are very cheap to buy. The two main choices in asphalt shingles are organic asphalt shingles or fiberglass asphalt shingles. Organic asphalt shingles have organic felt that is made from wood and paper fibers. On the other hand fiberglass asphalt shingles consists of fiberglass mat.
You can get both types of asphalt shingles in a large variety of colors, textures and grades. Fire ratings for both types of asphalt shingles are very different. Fiberglass shingles have got a Class A (highest level of fire resistance) rating whereas organic shingles have got Class C ratings. This difference makes fiberglass asphalt shingles a more popular choice than organic asphalt shingles.
Wood shingles and shakes have natural and appealing look. Cedar, redwood pine and other hard woods are all options for wood shingles and shakes. Cedar is an especially durable choice, since it offers natural resistance to insect damage, moisture and other forms of decay. Shingles and shakes have different looks. Wood shingles offer a smoother, more refined appearance. Shakes are thicker, rough hewn and offer a more rustic style.
Unless treated for fire-resistance, most wood roofing products have a class C fire resistance rating which is the lowest and some have no rating at all. Building codes should be checked before using wood shingles or shakes, since some areas limit their use because of fire concerns. In short, wood shingles and shakes offer an attractive natural look but have potentially lower fire ratings.
Metal roofs are highly durable (lasts for around 20 to 50 years or more), light weighted and resistant to weather. Many different types of metal roofs are available and most of them look like wood shingles or tile roofing. Metal roofs are very efficient in resisting fire and are rated as class A in resisting fire.
Generally steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and zinc alloys are used in metal roofing. The features and cost of metal roofing varies based on the type of metal used in making the roof. Usually, metal roofing is considered good for low slope roofs.
Slate is a natural stone that looks very attractive. It is very expensive to purchase but is extremely durable and strong. For installing a slate roof, the roofer needs to have good experience and knowledge.
Tiles are durable and attractive material to be used for roofing. However, their weight is a point of concern as they are heavy weighted. Hence, if your home is able to bear the weight of tiles then you can go for tile roofing.
