Filters are convenient for use in the house because there are several places you can install them depending on your water usage. The most common place to drink from is the kitchen faucet. The original filter mounts directly to the tap. This is the least invasive, and most economic, option. The filter unit is kept at easy access; making replacement easy. Tap water is suitable for cooking, washing, or hands. For drinking water, or coffee, filtered water will taste much better, and be healthier. Because you have the option of when you use the actual filter, it lasts longer.

Another option for kitchen filtration is an under the sink system. This type of filter processes all water that passes through it. It is hidden out of sight, so it does not clutter your kitchen. The actual system and cartridges are more expensive than most; though in the end it is a better investment.

Usually the under sink mounted filtration system will be plumbed to a separate tap that can be mounted to the back of the sink. This can be a simple attractive stainless steel tube style faucet made for filling drinking glasses that will not be in the way when you are using the sink for washing dishes.

Another spot where it is a great idea to install a filtration system is for your refrigerator. It defeats the purpose of having filtered water if you are going to put unfiltered ice cubes in it from the icemaker. An inline filter will solve this problem. Just remember that it will have a filter replacement cartridge that needs to be serviced as well.
