It is easy for anyone to enhance the look of their lawn. Lawn chemicals are easily available anywhere to treat lawn pests and ensure green lawns, but have you considered the risks these products present to you, your family, pets, and the environment. Waste material from chemical lawn treatments are absorbed into underground streams, or run-off into nearby streams and water sources polluting the drinking water. Chemical lawn materials may also harm various components of your local ecosystem causing irreversible problems. You can avoid these problems associated with chemical lawn care by switching to organic lawn care.

Not all soil is the same and it is important to determine your soils composition before treating the soil. The pH of the soil is also an important consideration in treating soil to develop a beautiful, green lawn. It is easy to have your soil tested to determine its acidity or alkalinity. Soil rich in limestone tends to be more alkaline, above 7.0 on the pH scale. Acidic soil is generally below 6.5 on the acidic scale. Knowing this will help you most effectively treat your soil.

One of the major problems associated with organic fertilizer is the smell. Many people simple don’t like to deal with the odor, so they opt for chemical fertilizers. The good news is that lawn fertilization is no longer an either-or proposition. There is now granular fertilizer made from treated sewage waste. It is safe and odorless, providing the perfect solution for organic lawn treatment.

There are a number of good organic fertilizers from which to choose. One of the best is Coconut Fiber. It is great for use with plants in acidic soil, with a pH of 5.5 – 6.3. Coconut Fiber, like other organic fertilizers should be easy to find in your local gardening store. Another good organic fertilizer is earthworm fertilizer. Earthworms themselves can be used to enrich the soil, as well. Use only small layers of fertilizer for in order to grow healthy, green plants and lawn.

It is also a good idea to consider organic pesticides when it comes to lawn and garden care. Organic pesticides are not harmful to you or the environment and are just as effective as chemicals in eliminating yard and garden pests. Diatomic earth, lawn care sand, oatmeal, cinnamon, and vinegar have all proven effective in eliminating lawn and garden pests.

It would be nice to return gardening and lawn care back to the way it used to be. When we use natural and organic ingredients for lawn care, we pay homage to the work which our grandparents put into their lawns and gardens without using harmful chemicals. You, like your grandparents, can grow beautiful, robust lawns and gardens using simple, natural and organic lawn care solutions.

Many times, lawns are neglected during the colder seasons. If it is neglected, it will show during the warmer months. Even though the lawn may look like it is dormant, how it is taken care of will make a different in the overall health. Taking care of a lawn during colder months is not difficult and the regimen will vary depending on the type of lawn you have.

Before you begin your lawn care, it is important to know what type of grass you have: cool or warm season. Common cool season grasses include bluegrass, fescues, ryegrass and bentgrass. Warm season grasses include Bermuda, zoysiagrass, Saint-Augustine and buffalograss. Different types of grasses will require different treatments.

To prevent lawn disease during colder months, remove leaves from the yard. If they are left on the lawn, it will prevent the sunlight and air from getting into the grass and encourage disease. The leaves need to be either raked or mulched with a mower. It is also important to remove any other debris on the lawn, including toys, logs and equipment. All of these can smother the grass.

Because the grass does not die in the winter, fertilizing is a good idea. This will prepare the grass for the spring making it much more health and green. Mulch added to the yard can act as insulation, keep the weeds down and prevent erosion of the soil. Cool-season grasses should be fertilized in September, October or November and warm-season grass in July, August or September.

Weeding the grass is essential in colder months because the grass in not growing as fast. Some weeds will take over and kill the grass. You may want to apply a weed killer. There are some called weed and feed that will fertilize the grass as well as kill the weeds.

As the colder season gets closer, slowly lower the height of your mower. A winter lawn should not start with new growth because it will attract diseases. New growth will easily dry out with the first cold winds. Lower your height gradually until you are almost shaving the lawn. Make sure this is done in steps so that you are not removing good tissue or hurting the turf.

After a long summer of activity on your lawn, it can be damaged and compacted. Giving your grass a good aerating before the colder season begins will discourage any thatch growth and also prepare the lawn for new and good growth in the spring.

With the proper care and maintenance of your lawn during the colder season, you will have a beautiful yard to be proud of in the spring.
