Container gardening is quickly becoming a favorite alternative to classic gardening.

Due to inadequate space, using the available areas on a patio, porch, or balcony can allow many people to satisfy their desire for a functional garden.

Container gardens both fill your home with wonderful fragrances and provide your family with cheap and readily available wholesome nourishment.

However, there are many things to take into consideration when starting a vegetable container garden.

1) You will want to be certain that all of your garden containers are in an area that will provide enough sunlight for your vegetables to grow while allowing easy access for watering.

Remember that some vegetables, such as cabbage, spinach etc., can thrive in the shade as well as sunlight.

However, a rotation of the containers is advisable to ensure that these particular vegetables get at least some sunlight when possible.

2) Though some plants only require watering once daily, some plants may require more frequent hydration depending on varying requirements from specific vegetables.

3) Tomatoes, lettuce, and radishes are just a few of the vegetables that are specifically known to thrive under the conditions provided by container growing.

Eggplants and peppers, both hot and mild, also grow well in container gardens.

4) Selecting the proper soil for your garden is the key. Synthetic soils are usually better for these types of gardens.

Synthetic soils are known to contain a calculated mix of peat moss, perlite, sawdust and other materials that are known to provide vegetables with sufficient nourishment.

Make sure that your containers will not dry out between watering and are free from any weed growth.

5) There are a multitude of options when choosing containers for your garden.

Clay, ceramic and even plastic containers are excellent choices for gardens. You can even use bushel baskets, drums, gallon cans, tubs and wooden boxes depending on their availability and the specific requirements of your garden.

6) Finally, it is of utmost importance that you are careful while harvesting the products of your hard work. Remember to set aside some seeds during your harvest for future projects.

In the world of agriculture, the advantages of a raised garden are widely accepted; from effective prevention of erosion to insect control to the custodial ease, this is a concept that you can apply to your vegetable garden.

The things you do differently when you design your garden to be raised versus level are not great in number…

If one side of your raised garden comes up against a wall or fence, then it is there that you want to plant any vegetables that you hope to climb a trellis.

In addition, you may do more “intensive” cultivation because the soil will be free of disease and pests, and you will be able to keep track of watering more easily.

Your taller growing plants should be planted centrally while your shorter plants should go towards the perimeter. This makes it much easier to tend to the lot of them.

Plant leaf lettuce and radishes in the same spot and time frame so that when the lettuce is ready to be collected, then the radishes will be well entrenched.

Lettuce and radishes will do quite nicely at the edges of your plot; nevertheless, don’t neglect the more humble items such as herbs; make sure they have a place in your design.

If you fancy some sort of potato in your garden, then locate them at the rows’ ends. Tending to them here will be much easier than if they are located elsewhere. And it will permit you to focus on them as you mound them up.

If you can remove the perimeter borders of your raised garden then it will be much easier to harvest them when the time comes.

Plant the veggies which will grow quickly in the early part of the season all in the same section.

This is exactly why wise garden design is so critical. There is no advantage to getting unnecessarily complicated; you can work from a sketch on a piece of paper.

Tweak it to make as efficient use as possible of your available space.

Or, is it possible that the tomato plants, having originated in a pot, will mature so quickly that, by the time they are harvested, the onions will be ready for the sunlight streaming through the now barren vines?

Will that spectacular squash or zucchini take over your garden, or will they fill in after your early yielding items have wrapped up? And do you really want THAT many zucchinis? You would better go for variety than quantity when you decide what to plant.

Don’t plant just a single tomato species, choose several. Sow a number of different kinds of greens: leaf lettuce, head(or bib) lettuce, cabbage, chard, mustard greens, collards, kale, etc.

This way, you will not find yourself eating the same veggies day after day, but instead delighting in the dazzling variety gracing your table throughout the year.

More and more people are becoming aware of the drawbacks of industrial food growth methods, and at the same time there is a growing understanding of the power of natural healing substances in many circumstances. As a result, many people are turning to organic herbal gardening for medicinal plants.

Herbalism, as it is usually called, involves collecting or growing your own plants and herbs for medicinal purposes, which has a century-old tradition in many parts of the world. Nowadays, organic gardening is the way to go if you want to grow your own, as it’s better to avoid raising therapeutic plants on pesticides and fertilizers.

It’s impossible to fully substitute modern pharmacy with natural products derived from organic herbal gardening, but there are a great number of common illnesses that can be effectively cured, or even prevented, with the use of natural remedies.

Overall, while herbal remedies have their critics, they provide a valuable complement to modern medicine for many ailments and its emphasis on prevention and balancing is liked with many who are striving for a more harmonic way of life.

Whether you are an experienced organic gardener or just starting out with natural medicinal herbs, you will probably share the wish to control the origin of foodstuffs and other bodily intakes with people with the same interest.

In fact organic gardening is going through a renaissance, but not many people are yet aware that the same principles that can be applied to organic food are also valid for plant-based medicines. And fewer yet know how easy it is to grow herbal remedies at home!

Often herbal remedies have been grown commercially under organic conditions, but the enterprising gardener can add a series of curative plants to the produce in his backyard, garden or windowsill and, armed with a good treatise on the subject, self-administer the results.

Herbal remedies can be prepared in a number of varying ways. Herbs can be eaten as culinary additives, and indeed there are certainly many herbal remedies already in your kitchen and diet, such as garlic and ginger root.

They can also be used for more topical applications, after having been mixed and made into pastes, creams or lotions, e.g. for applying to the skin. Herbal teas are another popular way of consuming herbal remedies, with chamomile being the most common and well known.

To start organic herbal gardening for the purpose of improving your health, you can either start from seeds or buy seedlings from specialist shops, either by going there in person or by buying over the internet.

There are a number of benefits associated with vegetable garden planting. It is good for your health, both mental and physical, and provides mild exercise. It also saves money and is a great home improvement.

The health benefits of growing your own vegetables are numerous. We all know that veggies are good for you, especially the greens. However, there is nothing like fresh, natural vegetables that you know exactly where they came from because they are right outside your door.

Large farms use chemicals and other pesticides on their crops because it is the simplest way to control large fields of vegetables. Home-grown vegetables are chemical free, and preservative free. One never knows what processes have been used on the cans of vegetables on the store shelf.

Vegetable garden planting is a great choice when looking for a hobby. Spending time outdoors soaking up the sun and some vitamin D is not a bad way to spend time. Gardening is a light form of exercise that is gentle enough for everyone. Weeding and working the dirt are not effortless, resulting in the burning of a few calories.

Along with the physical benefits, there are also mental benefits. Vegetable garden planting allows you to escape and concentrate on gardening instead of your troubles. Working hard is a proven reliever of stress. Gardening also allows you to be completely creative, which is good for the heart and soul as well.

Saving money is a brilliant way to save some money. There is no gas for the car required to go outside and pick a pepper from the garden. Travels to the grocery store do tend to add up, not to mention the excessive amount of time that “quick trip” may take. Time is money, so it is just as important to save a little of that as well.

Gardens can be added to any outdoor area, regardless of the size of the space available. Small planter boxes can be used on apartment patios and balconies. A small yard can house a garden contained in a wooden frame to minimize the space that is taken up by the plants.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, vegetable garden planting is a wonderful way to add a little something extra to an outdoor living space. Having a garden is satisfying to the senses. Spending quality time with family and friends in a beautiful place will certainly be worth the effort.

Building your own vegetable farm not only will save you money and time to travel for grocery, you will also gain numerous benefits from organic vegetables. vegetable garden planting are fresh and rich in nutrients than those you bought in the market that use pesticides. Freshly grown vegetables are also preservative free.

It can seem daunting to begin with an organic vegetable or herbal garden for the first time, but there are few better ways to be good to the planet while also being good to yourself and enjoying yourself.

Organically grown vegetables and herbs are safer, healthier and also taste better than those grown with the help of chemical products, plus you can save get for free what would cost you at the grocer’s.

When starting with organic vegetable and herbal gardening, you should prepare a composting box as soon as you can. Good compost is by far the best fertilizer for your garden and also acts as natural pest control. Contrarily to popular belief, your compost heap will neither smell nor look unseemly.

Your home-made compost will also fulfill a secondary purpose: it will help your organic garden to retain moisture, and as a result you will need to water your edible plants less often. Put all your kitchen waste and also any garden cuttings you may have onto the compost heap, but avoid great quantity of fish and meat remains.

The second step will be to get organic seeds so that you can start to grow vegetable and herbs in your organic garden. Don’t take any seeds, the vast majority are industrially and not organically grown.

There probably are specialized shops that sell organic seeds for gardening in your area, but you can also buy them through an online shop and have them mailed to you. Online is probably better for most users, as you get the convenience of choosing from home from a bigger catalogue, and as for all mailed products you can return organic gardening supplies if they are not up to your expectation.

Once you have the organic seeds, don’t plant them outdoors right away but let them sprout inside the house, using organic soil in small pots. There isn’t much that can go wrong at this stage, but avoid giving your seedlings them too much water or they will drown.

Once the first leaves are showing, put them into individual pots as a preparation to outdoor planting in your organic garden. There are some fine composting pots that you can use, plant them in the ground together with your seedling and let them act as extra natural fertilizer for your organic garden.

Vigorous, organic soil is fundamental for organic vegetable and herbal gardening. Like compost, good organic soil will not only grow healthier plants that taste better, but will also act as a natural pest controller. If you’ve had a non-organic garden before, it may take some time to clean the chemical laden soil, or you can dig it all out and start anew with organic soil.

Once the compost is ready, use it as a top layer on your soil. About five or six centimeters think is good for outdoor use. When you water, the nutrients will slowly seep through you your organic plants’ roots and the garden will thrive. You are on the right way to a serious supply of organic herbs and vegetables.

You will find that planting a vegetable garden is a rewarding use of your time. Not only that, but it is also good for your health because of all the exercise you are going to get, and the vegetables you’ll eat. It is more important than ever to have pesticide free vegetables, but many feel intimidated by the idea of planting vegetable gardens, particularly in a city. What with the busy city lifestyle, constrained spaces and pollution, it seems inconceivable a vegetable garden would survive, much less thrive. But the fact is that you can have a very successful vegetable garden even if you are in the middle of the large city. For that success to be possible, it is very important that you get the basics of planting vegetable gardens right.

Vegetable gardens are typically simpler to maintain than flower gardens because vegetables are a lot more resilient, particularly if you have a variety of types of weather. Flowers are normally a lot more sensitive to changes in the weather, and do not adapt as easily. Vegetable gardens usually demand a lot of space, although a few veggies will thrive in plant boxes. It really depends on what type of vegetables you plant, and what you anticipate from your vegetable garden.

Regardless of whether you expect to use a plot of land in your backyard or start with just plant boxes, soil preparation plays an important role in the survival of your vegetable garden. There are three types of soil: sand, clay and silt. Sandy soil is loose and helps the roots of plants breathe because it lets the air pass through very easily. Clay soil absorbs water faster and keeps it inside longer; a soil composition with a lot more clay particles in it would be ideal for places which are as well hot, and also the soil dries up swiftly. Silt is a fine mixture of sand and clay particles.

Check to make sure you have just the right mixture of sand, silt, and clay before you begin planting your garden. Ideally, silt and sand should both be 40%, and clay should be 20%; this is to make sure water drains correctly. Too much water can choke the roots or even make them start to rot! One good method to test whether the composition of your soil is right starts by scooping out a handful and forming a ball with it. The soil should hold the shape of the ball easily. If it cannot hold the shape, your mixture probably has too much silt or sand. On the other hand, if the ball does not crumble easily when you poke it, the soil mixture probably has too much clay in it. Experiment with this until you have the proper balance of silt, sand and clay.

When preparing the soil for the vegetable garden, dig up the soil and break up the lumps. Remove any rocks, roots, and weeds while you’re at it. After you finish cultivating the soil, pick the vegetable you want to grow there, but keep in mind that some types do not grow well close to other particular kinds of vegetables. For example, don’t plant potatoes too close to squash or tomatoes because it will stunt their growth. They can all be planted in the same garden, just don’t plant them beside each other.

The normal method of planting veggies is to lay them out in straight, organized row. Some individuals prefer to plant alternating rows of diverse sorts of veggies. When one type of vegetable might be ready for harvest, the rows in between them have vegetables that are not yet ripe. An excellent alternative method is to plant in beds rather than rows. Plan the size of your beds to allow you to easily reach in and pull out weeds. Also, raising the beds slightly allows for better heat retention during cold weather and helps with drainage.

Once you decide on what vegetables you want and plant them, you need to water them correctly. Vegetables need regular watering so, if you are planting a vegetable garden in a big space, consider utilizing a soaker hose. Soaker hoses have numerous holes along the body and water by letting the water seep out the holes.

Planting a vegetable garden will require some work and a fair amount of patience. The rewards are easily worth it all, though. Particularly for people concerned with the state of their health. Growing your own veggies allows you to raise crops without the use of pesticides. Besides contributing to your wellness, it is a great feeling knowing that your are eating something that you grew in your own vegetable garden.

According to the National Gardening Association's 2009 Impact of Home and Community Gardening In America report, 7 million more households are participating in home vegetable gardening, as well as fruit, herbs and berry cultivation this year, compared to last. This means that 37% of all US households are doing some of their own food production. The number of home gardeners has increased 19%, compared to just 10% from 2007-2008. "More Americans are recognizing the benefits of growing their own produce, including improved quality, taste and cost savings," the NGA report concludes.
The Number of Vegetable Gardeners is on the Rise is a post from: The Grow Garden

There are 7 million more households involved in home vegetable gardening in 2009, compared to last year, says the National Gardening Association. Last year, home gardeners spent $2.5 billion on seeds, plants, fertilizer, supplies and garden tools to grow their own food. Given the investment, on average, a well-maintained home garden yields a $500 return. These findings come from the January 2009 Impact of Home and Community Gardening in American study, which surveyed 2,559 households.

So just who are all these new gardeners? “The demographics of today’s food gardening households include a broad cross-section of the U.S. population. There are few other outdoor activities where virtually every demographic group is so well represented, no matter what their age, education, income, marital status, household size, gender, or regional location,” concludes the NGA report.

The food gardening experience is enjoyed primarily by women (54%), those ages 45+ (68%), college students (43%) and married couples with no children at home (67%). The gardeners are pretty evenly spread across the South, Midwest, West and Northeast. Those making $35,000 – $49,999 in household income are the most common gardening group (24%), although many who make over $75,000 (22%), under $35,000 (21%) and between $50,000 and $74,999 (16%) are also represented.

Most households spent about $70 on seeds, soil, garden supplies and garden tools this year, but their produce savings totaled over $500! Home gardeners in 36 million households grew vegetables (23%), herbs (12%), fruit trees (10%) and berries (6%). Vegetable growers spent about $53 to get started, while fruit tree owners spent $61, herb growers spent $30 and berry growers spent $29. All in all, $1.4 billion went toward vegetable gardening spending, $538 million toward fruit trees, $138 million toward berry growing and $391 million toward herb growing. Truly, these industries are growing in America.

When asked why home gardeners are participating in the gardening experience, the overwhelming majority (58%) said they want “better-tasting food.” Over half of the participants (54%) say they want to save money on food bills; 51% say they want “better quality food” and 48% say they want “to grow food they know is safe.” About 34% of gardeners say the economic downturn has motivated them to grow food this year. Perhaps it’s the growing concerns over what is organic and what is sprayed with potentially harmful pesticides, which makes the average American consumer more skeptical of grocery store produce. Or perhaps it’s the recent scares we’ve had with tomatoes, peppers and peanuts this year. The National Gardening Association study revealed the underlying suspicions of the average consumer, but also this wave of frugality and earth stewardship that seems to be brewing as well.

The benefits of a vegetable garden can’t be beat. You’ll get to enjoy fresh picked produce and you’ll get some great exercise at the same time! From the organic vegetable garden to herb gardening, you’ll find the information you need at the Vegetable Garden Site.

A garden landscape is a wonderful and relaxing place to be in away from the hassle and bustle of the noisy downtown. Garden landscaping is usually laid out in a large area but still some gardens are also made in limited space.

Formal Garden Landscaping was Popular in Europe during the Renaissance Era and in 1880s in the United States. Formal gardening landscape are made of geometric patterns that has boundaries that are defined by stone walkways, walls, hedges, fences, fountains, and statuary. Still Formal gardening landscape exists today in Botanical gardens and large estates. While the Modern/Domestic Garden landscape are the ones made on limited available space especially for people who live in urban areas. The following are the types of Garden landscaping that are widely use today which are the Organic, Herb, Roof, Vegetable, Rock, Water, Flower, and Public gardens.

Organic garden landscape nowadays is highly emphasize because it does not use artificial pesticides and fertilizers that can harm living things. In this garden landscape it only use biological fertilizers and pesticides to keep plants healthy.

The Herb garden landscape is found in medieval gardens and botanical gardens. The plants found in this garden landscapes are those with medicinal purposes like parsley, fennel, thyme, marjoram, dill, and rosemary which can be used also in flavoring foods.

The roof garden landscape is seen in homes in the urban areas that have limited space. Plants are placed on containers and small pots.

Vegetable garden landscape is a healthy type of garden landscape. It needs open and sunny location. To prevent disease transmission between the plants the rotation of crops is important. Being familiar with the plant you’ll use in this garden landscape is important.

The garden landscape mimics a rocky hillside or slope. This garden landscape should look like its a part of a hillside. The use of large boulders would make it look better. The arrangement of rocks must provide different levels of exposure to sun-tolerant plants like rock roses and shade-tolerant plant such as primulas.

The next one is the Water Garden Landscape. In this Garden landscape it’s important to consider your location, culture, and climate. The shape of water garden landscape in Europe and North America are rectangular or circular pools that contain one or two water lilies and a fountain, or sometimes there are no flowers. Also in United States and Europe informal water garden landscape are irregularly shaped with profusion of water lilies and other plants that suit a watery habitat. Water Garden Landscape in Japan has a particular and beautiful patterns in them that they preserved for centuries. While in temperate countries, the water garden landscape is grown under the glass in which the pools are heated. Water Garden Landscaping represent some of oldest forms of gardening landscape. While based on Egyptian about 2000 BC the records and pictures showed the cultivation of water lilies.

The one that would caught our attention is the flower garden landscape because of the different blooms. The blending and contrast of colors are the vital components. It is essential to know which flower is planted.

Public garden landscape is the last type of garden landscape. An example of this garden landscape is the Japanese Garden in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park which is world-famous.

There are various choices of plants available now. So be wise in choosing which garden landscape fits you well.

If you are just starting out in herb gardening for the first time, you may not be sure which herbs are best for your garden. Well, there are many herbs that you can choose from; however, there are some that are a bit harder to grow. The following are a few great simple herbs that you can easily grow, even if you are a beginner.

Parsley – A hardy, easy to grow herb is parsley. You can grow curly leaf and flat leaf parsley easily, and they grow wonderfully without you having to give them a whole lot of care. They do well in either light shade or full sun, and they prefer moist soil that is nice and rich. However, it’s important to note that parsley doesn’t do overly well in the heat.

Cilantro – Cilantro is used in many Spanish dishes and has a distinct flavor. This is an annual herb that grows well both in the shade and the sun. You’ll find that it is very easy to care for and it will grow pretty well in just about any type of climate.

Chives – Chives are a perennial herb. Chives can grow well in almost any soil, and almost any conditions. Chives have been known to be seen growing in old gardens that haven’t been tended in many years! It’s hardy in zones 3-9, and prefers full sun. It does do better in rich soils, but doesn’t need it to survive. Chives have a rich, oniony flavor, and they taste great on baked potatoes.

Oregano – Oregano is probably one of the most popular herbs to grow in an herb garden and it is tasty with a variety of foods. You can use it in many dishes, including pork, chicken, and pasta dishes. It is an herb that does great in just about any area. It should have soil that is well drained and also likes full sun, but it will even grow in soil that is rocky and poor.

Thyme – Thyme is a perennial herb. It is hardy in zones 4-6. It’s a small, shrub-like herb that requires full sun and moist, well-drained soil. It is quite hardy in its standard zones, and doesn’t require much care at all.

Basil – Basil in a warm-weather annual herb. It is hardy in most zones, but it requires hot, dry conditions to reach peak flavor. It needs full sun, and very rich, moist soil. The only major issues with growing basil are slugs and cool conditions. As long as basil has enough light and heat, and its soil is allowed to dry out between waterings, it usually requires little additional care.

Bay – Although it is a type of shrub, this is actually a very good herb for beginners to grow. It’s hardy in zones 8-11, and is remarkably hardy in those zones. It needs full sun to light shade, and rich, well-drained soil. It will tolerate variations in conditions rather well. Just remember, bay leaves reach their full flavor when dry, so be sure to press them between layers of paper towels inside heavy books for a few weeks before you use them.

Herbs are not difficult to grow. Start with one or two easy herbs and gradually build up your herb garden. Make sure you pay attention to the climate they prefer. While they may be hardy and grow in a variety of places, they’ll do the best when you keep them in a suitable climate. Once you have tried fresh herbs in your food, you will wonder how you ever got along without them.

Lawns may look good, but they are unproductive, require a lot of care, and are environmentally unfriendly due to the high use of pesticides and fertilizers necessary to maintain them. As even the White House has discovered, turning a lawn into an organic vegetable garden is a much better use for the land.

Oftentimes owners of a lawn would like to turn all or part of it into a nice organic vegetable garden, but they don’t because of the perceived workload, especially because they are put off by the idea of having to do all that ploughing. But there is a much easier way.

First, delimit the lawn area for your organic vegetable garden with some thread, or with chalk. You can make it as big as the White House veggie garden patch, thirty by thirty feet, or smaller. Water this area generously, making sure that the ground is thoroughly soaked.

Next you need to add an area of ground mulch that contains some slow-release nutrients. A good mix is half-finished compost, grass clippings from the lawn, manure, rock phosphate, and sand. Finish off by covering the whole area with four to five overlapping sheets of newspaper.

Next you have to build a frame that will hold your growing soil. The best material for this is cheap building planks, which you can get in any hardware shop. Make sure that they are untreated and unpainted, to keep with the organic theme of the vegetable garden. Stick the frame on top of the paper layer, making sure that the latter sticks out a bit at the edges.

Now fill the frame or frames with organic compost and topsoil. In the beginning you will have to buy the compost, but after your organic vegetable garden has gotten underway you will be able to make your own. Add some porous pebbles or vermiculite to the mix for aeration.

You should now leave everything as it is for at least a couple of weeks, ideally for a month. In this time, your old lawn and the organic materials on top will decompose, with the help of earthworms that will return to the previously sterile earth, and everything will turn into a fertile mixture for your seeds.

Now is the time to plant baby plants known as seedlings, or alternatively seeds. If you don’t have any available from a windowsill you can get seeds and seedlings from shops, from neighbours, or over the internet at specialized organic vegetable gardening retailers.

Regarding the herbs and vegetables to pick for your lawn turned new garden, go wild and take whatever you prefer. Don’t be afraid to leave out some common plants and go for lesser known crops, the variety of plants available to the home grower compared to the supermarket is staggering.

It’s recommended to involve any kids that live in your area in the planning of the organic vegetable garden. This should of course include your own children, but also any other kids in your neighbourhood that your family is on friendly terms with. They will be engrossed in the activity, and you will get some help to transform that lawn into a garden.

Starting a compost heap is just as important as the other steps to a perfect organic vegetable garden. For that you need to pile all your garden clippings and non-animal kitchen waste into a wooden frame or a special composting box and water. After a while, you will have more compost for your plants.
